A volcanic crater flooded by the sea, with a protected reef and remarkable snorkelling close to Honolulu. Entry is managed; visitors must follow conservation guidance and current reservation rules.

What to expect

Hanauma Bay is a nature preserve on Oʻahu's south-east coast, inside a volcanic crater that has been flooded by the sea. Calm, shallow water covers a large reef, and you can often see colourful fish and green sea turtles. It is one of Hawaiʻi's best-known snorkelling spots.

Getting there

The bay is about 30 minutes by car from Waikiki. Parking is limited and fills early.

Good to know

Visitors must book an entry time online in advance, and the bay is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. All visitors watch a short educational video before going down to the beach. Do not touch the coral or turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen.

Travel gentlyCoastal conditions, access rules and facilities can change. Check current local guidance before setting out, respect protected areas and take all litter with you.
