A little more about Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach

A striking black-sand beach on Hawaiʻi Island, where coconut palms meet volcanic shore. Green sea turtles sometimes bask here; admire them from a respectful distance.

What to expect

Punaluʻu is a black-sand beach on the south-east coast of the Island of Hawaiʻi, the Big Island. Coconut palms line the shore, and the jet-black sand contrasts with the blue water. Hawaiian green sea turtles often rest on the sand.

Getting there

The beach is about an hour's drive from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and around 90 minutes from Kona. There is a car park beside the beach.

Good to know

Stay at least three metres (about 10 feet) away from turtles and never touch them. Taking black sand is not allowed. Currents and rocks make swimming risky, so only enter the water when it is calm.

Travel gentlyCoastal conditions, access rules and facilities can change. Check current local guidance before setting out, respect protected areas and take all litter with you.
