A little more about Maitai Bay

A sheltered, twin-crescent bay in Northland with clear water, pohutukawa trees and a peaceful campground. It rewards the journey to the remote Karikari Peninsula.

What to expect

Maitai Bay is a pair of sheltered, sandy crescents at the tip of the Karikari Peninsula in Northland. The water is calm and clear, and pōhutukawa trees bloom red along the shore in early summer. It has a quiet, remote feel even at busy times.

Getting there

The bay is about 40 minutes from Kaitaia and roughly five hours' drive north of Auckland. The last part of the road is narrow and winding.

Good to know

The Department of Conservation campground behind the beach is very popular in summer, so book well ahead. Walking tracks lead to headlands with views across the coast. Snorkel near the rocks on calm days.

Travel gentlyCoastal conditions, access rules and facilities can change. Check current local guidance before setting out, respect protected areas and take all litter with you.
